Philosophy of Education

My teaching philosophy is that students will learn when they are regulated and feel connected to their class community. Students learn best when they are engaged, and having fun and being active is one of the best ways to achieve that! As an educator, it is my belief that education functions to meet the diverse needs of the students in our care, and some days that could mean taking a step back from academic needs and ensuring basic needs are being met first.

My teaching philosophy is that students are children first, and that children learn best from people they feel genuinely connected to. In my experience, building a supportive learning community and taking the time to recognize the uniqueness of each student sets them up for success at school and beyond. When students feel seen and have confidence in themselves, they approach difficult tasks with more perseverance and are more willing to try again in the face of adversity.

My educational approach with regards to the BC Curriculum is focused on the Big Ideas and Curricular Competencies as I see these as the foundational skills that are being continually developed throughout K-12. I believe that practicing these transferable skills will contribute to the well-being and success of students in their future pursuits. It is my belief that education functions to build future generations of contributing citizens who will appreciate diverse cultures and skills sets within their communities. It is important to share my enthusiasm for learning with my students and model that learning truly is a lifelong journey.
