As we are now well aware, Canadian systems of education were historically used to assimilate Indigenous groups and remove them from their culture. To move forward as a society, teachers must take on the work to create an environment where Indigenous children feel welcomed and safe to express their culture. The First People’s Principles provide a guide to respectfully Indigenizing one’s teaching practice. The implementation of the First People’s Principles of Learning enhances the depth and quality of all student learning. My teaching pedagogy has been heavily shaped by the First People’s Principles of Learning, and it consistently guides my teaching practice as I stumble through the process of Indigenizing the Canadian education experience.
