Statement of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Education
Growing up in Richmond BC where multiculturalism is the norm, and I had the privilege of living, working, and playing alongside people of all ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. I definitely felt a shift in culture when I moved to the interior and had to uncomfortably acknowledge the lack of visible diversity in the local community. With regards to the demographics of the interior region of BC, I believe it is critical to address biases and barriers that have prevented marginalized groups from taking up space and having their voices heard.
I think the shift away from equality and towards equity benefits diverse learners by allowing educators to focus supports on the most vulnerable students. As an educator, it is critical that I design units that are made with Universal Design of Learning to meet the diverse needs that will present within any classroom community. Even with inclusively designed learning tasks, I am always prepared to further differentiate learning tasks so that all learners have an accessible entry point into the learning.
My commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion goes beyond the realm of being a responsible and progressive citizen. As an educator I am dedicated to continually growing both professionally and personally so that I can effectively advocate and create space for voices that have been historically marginalized. The inclusion of multiple cultures and perspectives in my teaching practice, particularly of Indigenous cultures, is an honour to facilitate as an educator in British Columbia. As part of my ongoing journey to decolonize education and create an inclusive classroom, I am committed to further developing my cultural competence and reflecting on my cultural humility.
